CMS Advances Nurse Incentive Program for Rural and Underserved Nursing Homes

CMS is moving forward with a program offering RNs, LPNs, and LVNs up to $40K in loan repayment and $10K in living stipends at qualifying nursing homes.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) featured its Nursing Home Staffing Campaign in its April 30 MLN Matters newsletter, highlighting a nurse financial incentives program with applications opening soon.

The program offers up to $40,000 in student loan repayments and $10,000 in living stipends to registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) who commit to working in qualifying nursing homes for three years.

While CMS has yet to define what constitutes a "qualifying nursing home," program language suggests these facilities will be located in rural and/or underserved areas. LeadingAge has inquired about further details and was told more information is forthcoming. The recent webpage update and newsletter mention signal that CMS is actively advancing this initiative.
