LeadingAge is urging stakeholders to help us sound the alarm on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) proposal for an unprecedented expansion of its authority to revoke and deny Medicare enrollments simply based on who a provider chooses to partner or affiliate with and employ.

If the rule moves forward as proposed, all Medicare-enrolled providers could be required to report to CMS on decades of affiliations with businesses supporting a range of activities, from marketing to supply procurement, and to report on every staff member that controls any aspect of day-to-day operations. For many LeadingAge members, this would be a crushing obligation. We all support removing bad actors from the Medicare program. But we must let CMS know that unduly burdening and penalizing legitimate providers based on their affiliations is not the way to root out and eliminate fraud.
